Built in 1915 for the purpose of converting electricity for the suburban rail system in the local area, the Newport Substation is now reborn after an extensive restoration and renovation project. After ceasing operations in 1967, the building was finally locked up in 1969. Over the years that followed, the Substation was home to thieves, vandals and squatters. By the 1990s it had become derelict.
The Substation was finally rescued in 1996 by two local residents, Nigel Edwards and Darren Williams, who developed the idea of restoring and adapting the Newport Substation into a community arts facility. Now known as the Hobsons Bay Community Arts Centre, the Substation is a high profile community project located within Newport village. An architecturally splendid neo-Classical structure, the Newport Substation is now available for hire. With a choice of 14 studios and workshop spaces, a gallery and a large performance floor , the Substation is a multi-purpose centre which caters for:
